Chimney anatomy
Every part of a chimney, what it does and what goes wrong with it.
PART 01
Chimney cap
The chimney cap sits on top of the chimney and prevents rain, debris, and animals from entering.
- Cap gets damaged or blown away
- Rust and corrosion
- Clogs with debris
PART 02
Crown
The crown is a slab that covers the top of the chimney, slightly sloped to shed water.
- Cracks develop in the crown
- Water leakage
- Erosion over time
PART 03
Flashing
Flashing is a waterproof seal between the chimney and roof to prevent water leaks.
- Leaks due to poor installation
- Corroded metal
- Separation from the roof
PART 04
Brick and mortar
The masonry is the brick and mortar structure that forms the main body of the chimney.
- Cracked or crumbling bricks
- Missing mortar
- Efflorescence (white stains)
PART 05
Flue liner
The flue liner is a protective layer that lines the inside of the chimney to improve safety and efficiency.
- Cracked or deteriorated liner
- Liner blockage
- Improper sizing
PART 06
Smoke chamber
The smoke chamber funnels smoke from the firebox into the flue and is located just above the damper.
- Parging issues leading to inefficient smoke flow
- Build-up of creosote
- Cracks in chamber walls
PART 07
Damper
The damper controls the flow of air and smoke through the chimney, located just above the firebox.
- Fails to open or close properly
- Rust and corrosion
- Warping
PART 08
Firebox
The firebox is the area where the fire burns, constructed with fire-resistant materials.
- Cracked firebricks
- Deteriorated mortar joints
- Smokey backdraft issues
